VERSE
You know they said when he was shakin' a leg
He could not kneel to pray
But they did not understand the man
He loved his Lord in every way
VERSE
From the heart, he'd sing a gospel song
In the middle of a rock and roll show
I know he knew right just like he knew wrong
Heaven above; hell below
CHORUS
When he was shakin' a leg, shakin' a leg
He could not kneel to pray
But he could move you to the edge, oh, Lord
Oh, he could make your day
He was doin,' oh yes, for me and you
What he'd been sent here by his Lord to do
He was shakin' a leg, he was shakin' a leg
He was shakin,' shakin' a leg
SOLO/VERSE
The pious said it was the devil's way
We'd all have hell to pay
But they were wrong because Elvis knew
That his Lord had told him what to do
VERSE
Now we all know he brought people to their feet
Yes, indeed, we moved to the beat
Now Jesus loves him; this I know
Where the peaceful waters flow
Repeat CHORUS/TAG
He was shakin' a leg, he was shakin' a leg
He was shakin,' shakin' a leg

Story Behind the Song: In August, 1977, the month Elvis passed away, I was listening to a radio personality interviewing a preacher about Elvis. The preacher, like some preachers in the 50s, apparently thought Elvis was akin to the devil and said: "You know, when he was shakin' a leg, he could not kneel to pray." Being a budding songwriter, I wrote that down as a statement that may have been literally true, but what it really said was that the preacher was clueless about Elvis's religious views and relationship to his maker. I carried that hook around with me for probably 40 years before I wrote it. This is the result.
